California Burning

The past several years have been really hard on California with the wildfires that burn thousands of acres before the firefighters can get them under control. Last year there were horrific fires in northern California as well as southern California. This year we have had a large number of fires, too, especially this past June.

There’s a fire just north of L.A. that is being fueled by heavy winds today. There are mandatory evacuations again, and hundreds of homes are at risk of being wiped out. There is even a chance that the rest of the city will have a problem with loss of electricity because of this fire.

We all need Mother Nature to give California a break.

Target Advertising

Recently I have noticed that a popular department store has put alot of flair in their advertising. If you have watched some of their television commercials you will hear a Beatles’ song “Hello” as the theme song and beautiful models displaying the latest fashions. Most of the time, you won’t even notice the merchandise that’s being advertised because of the eye-popping colors on the commercial and the fun music. I think a lot of people like to shop at this store because you can get hip designer clothes for less, everyday items and do some grocery shopping on the side.

Demographics and Business

I started this job as an intern and recently got accepted as a research assistant. It has been quite an interesting experience working in a field that requires a lot of marketing and demographics research knowledge. This company is a technology firm that builds custom websites and desktop applications for Fortune 500 companies.

Each day is like going to college again. Everday, I learn something new. For example, I have learned how demographics affects business and can help with target marketing, profiling customers, and site location analysis. Understanding demographics is a necessity when it comes to making the right business decisions.

Vietnamese Fine Dining

This evening my girlfriend and I took her Aunt and Uncle to an elegant Vietnamese restaurant. I say elegant because it is scales above the regular Vietnamese noodle shops. This restaurant named “S” is Zagat rated and has the atmoshere of a five star restaurant. The interior is well designed, sort of an Asian fusion style with a tropical resort like ambience. The service is excellent with well dressed waiters and there is a grand piano for live entertainment or soft Oriental music plays otherwise. They have a full bar and a fine wine list and this is a definite place for a romantic dinner date. However, it is the savory flavors and exquisite dishes that makes this a place to come to and enjoy. There are the traditional favorites like beef noodle soup (Pho Bo) and egg rolls (Chai Goi) but there are some unique appetizers like beef wrapped in grape leaves and beef spring rolls (Goi Cuon Bo). One of the main entrees is Orange Roughy with tumeric, ginger, and lime juice, another one is Filet Mignon with sauteed onions, rice, and cucmber salad. There are many more exotic Vietnamese dishes to temp one’s palate and we are looking forward to another visit.
